Hello, my lovelies. Pinky Lovejoy here reflecting back on a time when rainbow suspenders were all the rage
and all the cool kids in school carried lunchboxes from Ork.
That’s right – today we’re talking about the beloved TV series, Mork & Mindy, starring Robin Williams and Pam Dawber which ran from 1978 until 1982.
Although I was only five when the series began, I remember just thinking this was the greatest thing on earth. Mork was the funniest alien I’d ever seen (did I see a lot of aliens at that young age?) and Mindy was his perfect match.
As the seasons went by, I remember owning a pair of the rainbow suspenders, carrying the Mork & Mindy lunchbox, and I’m sure there had to be some stickers thrown in for good measure.
Come to think of it, this was probably the first time I noticed a lot of marketing going into a show I watched (and you know it only got worse from there). Mork & Mindy was a tremendously funny show with heart and it never failed to make me laugh.
Even better? Do you know who happened to guest star on the final episode of the series? My own fiance, the one and only Keith Coogan (Mikey would be disappointed if I didn’t find a way to put Keith into almost every article I write, so really, I’m just bringing this up for him).
(Editor’s Note: Ummmmm M-)
Speaking of Keith, a few months ago we attended a Downton Abbey garden party which not only had a member of Downton Abbey there, but other celebrities, as well, dressed up in their finest 1920’s attire.
Among the guests we found was none other than Pam Dawber (otherwise known as Mindy) and her husband, Mark Harmon.
Pam could not have been sweeter. Not only did I get a chance to get a picture with her,
but she and Keith had a chance to catch up after meeting so many years ago on-set.
It was an unexpected surprise and one which totally made our night. Hello, Mindy!
As I’d been lucky enough to meet Robin Williams (otherwise known as Mork) at Sundance in 2002, meeting Pam was just icing on the cake and I was thrilled to have been able to meet the duo which made me smile so much in my youth (apologies for the poor quality of the Robin Williams picture, as it was a scan of a disposable picture….). Meeting such icons and having them both be awesome was great.
