LOL, I was talking to my friend the other day, and I was talking about the site… a little site you may be reading called Mike The Fanboy, however I started writing about events much earlier than the site has been around. And so it was suggested to me that since the one year anniversary is coming up of Mike The Fanboy I should do a flashback of my first report… and I said… yes… that’s fun… LOL… I always like looking back and how writing style and different things change…
I think I’m more jaded now… lol… Anyway, my first article was about the New Kids on the Block cd signing at Best Buy. It was huge, tons of people, tents and all kinds of crazy, lol… Check out the first Mike The Fanboy article after the jump!
On a scorching Thursday morning a line wraps around the Burbank Best Buy. What could it be you ask? Apple unveiling a new I-Pod? The Thanksgiving super sales? Are Coldplay making a rare in-store appearance? Nope… Something more iconic, something to talk about for ages, something that will go down in history as one of the strangest things I have ever done. Yes, it’s true… THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK ARE HERE! LIVE AND IN PERSON! And I lived to tell the world, that yes, I met Jordan.
9:30 a.m. – I arrive on the scene and pass lines of tents, chairs and middle aged women clutching random paraphernalia. Someone has dolls. Wristbands get passed out at 10:00 a.m. if you pre-purchase the cd.
9:34 a.m. – I meet two young ladies (photographed) who have been in line for wristbands since 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They actually slept at the Best Buy. They took two trains, and a bus to get here. I admire their commitment, but I have to say, I’m slightly nervous in their presence.
9:45 a.m. – There are tents! Orange tents, blue tents. The line stretches to the back of the building. There are so many vintage NKOTB tees you could fill a shop on Melrose. I am currently #400 in line. I am here with my Friend Scott, and our friend Minta.
9:58 a.m. – There is a car with a PERMINANT sticker of NKOTB on the back of it.
10:00 a.m. – The line is moving! Whoo hoo… I hear a “Hangin’ Tough” ringtone in the distance.
10:08 a.m. – I stop and wonder, are NKOTB to us what The Jonas Brothers are to kids of this generation.
10:11 a.m. – Minta gets a text message from a friend. It reads, “I love Jordan and Need to see him.”
10:13 a.m. – We start to notice all the many… MANY small kids here. There are ages 5-11 and can’t have any idea who they are in line for. We realize their parents probably couldn’t get babysitters.
10:15 a.m. – There are now over 40 people behind us in line. I start to wonder why I’m here.
10:17 a.m. – I notice the Geek squad van behind me. How appropriate.
10:36 a.m. – We are halfway through the line!
10:55 a.m. – A woman has just ran past us clutching her commemorative NKOTB laminate screaming, “I’m holding on to this with my life!”
11:00 a.m. – A lady in line just asked Scott for the cap to his coke bottle. Not the bottle just the cap. We don’t ask questions, we just hand over the cap. We are almost in the door!
11:10 a.m. – Finally! We get our Best Buy laminates, wristbands, and receipts which we have to save or Best Buy with throw us out of line when we get back. Nice to know. Now they are telling us that they have nothing for those rascally New Kids to sign… A signing with nothing to sign. Hmmmm interesting. Apparently, the cd comes out next week. So, now we have to find something for them to sign, or they will sign the lovely laminate we have… ah… a signed laminate… how nice.
1:00 p.m. – After placing a few calls, I realize there is nothing NKOTB related for sale anywhere. Even cd’s. nothing.
1:15 p.m. – A last minute thought, lets me turn up two original copies of the Hangin’ Tough sheet music. It’s actually cool, with a nice picture on the front. Apparently, they have had them since the 80’s. Can you believe no one wanted them?
5:00 p.m. – I just picked up the sheet music and I am in the back of the line. Someone just asked me if I think the New Kids will get helicoptered in. This person is 40.
5:30 p.m. – Minta just sang Hangin’ Tough on a friend’s voicemail. I didn’t realize that the lyrics are, “Listen up everybody if you wanna take a chance. Just get on the floor and do the new kids dance.”
5:45 p.m. – I ask Scott to do the New Kids dance. I get a scornful look.
6:05 p.m. – I walk to the front to get a water, and a fight breaks out! A guy is telling some girl to go fuck herself, he was in front of her, and was in line since 3:00 p.m. yesterday. She is yelling back, and now another lady with a child is yelling, “There are children present.” The rent-a-security is just standing there. Oh, wait they are sauntering over. The guy is all red faced. Dude, I think he’s going to pop! There really is nothing like rent-a-security to make one feel secure. Good timing on my part! Whoo Hoo!
7:11 p.m. – We hear that the New Kids have arrived!
7:20 p.m. – Okay, so know we think that they are not here…. Grrr…
7:45 p.m. – We have confirmation the Kids are here, but the line has not moved. The signing “started” at 7:00 p.m.
8:14 p.m. – We are now being yelled at. No personal pictures! No cameras!
8:20 p.m. – Uh oh.. the mother’s with children are turning on the Best Buy employee’s…you can feel it. There’s going to be another fight!
8:45 p.m. – We can now see the door, but it feels far far away. It’s amazing a small piece of pavement I usually cross in a second, now feels like the sahara. The line is moving so slow. Oh wait, we are being yelled at again. Now, if we have camera’s we have to bring them to the car. So, we have to get out of line, and then get back in line. Did anyone else see the fight earlier?
9:05 p.m. – After debating, I decide to keep the camera.
9:30 p.m. – Oh, security is yelling at us again.
9:43 p.m. – We’re now inside! We can see the setup. A Best Buy employee asks me if I would like her to take pictures of us. But… we weren’t allowed to bring cameras in… Hmmmm…. Still she’s either very sweet, or a plant to take all of our cameras….
9:46 p.m. – Okay, we just met the Kids. Jon was super cool and shook hands and greeted people. Jordan was stand offish and didn’t really look up.
Danny, was great and started talking to me even though I couldn’t really hear what he said.
Donnie, shook everyone’s hand and was very friendly. We got our crap signed! Very cool.
9:49 p.m. – Someone has my camera. Grrrr….
9:55 p.m. – I get my camera back! Whew… I would hate for some pics I have stored on this camera to get out there.. cough… cough…
Overall, a long interesting day. Many middle aged women got to meet their idols, and it brought them so much happiness. That was such a blessing to see. And it was cool that NKOTB were for the most part cool guys. Did I mention it was a long day? 😉 Oh, and I still get to listen to the new cd… when it comes out 9-2-08… I know I won’t be the first in line, if I remember to even pick the damn thing up.
