Fan Expo Canada 2014!! A Re-cap of One of the Biggest Cons in North America! Gaming! TV! Celebrities! Cosplay!
If you’re wondering exactly how many cons I’ve attended this year, it’s a lot! But I couldn’t miss the opportunity to head to Toronto for Fan Expo Canada since it’s a really big con, but it manages to feel pretty manageable for all that’s going on! (Bigger on the inside, you might say!)
As the biggest con in Canada and the third biggest in North America (after San Diego and New York), Fan Expo Canada hosts a wide array of exhibitors. I’ve already talked about some of the major networks with the posts on Showcase and Space, but there’s also a big gaming presence. The major gaming players, consoles and retailers were all here to preview upcoming games.
Bronies were happy to meet the ponies
The Star Wars Rebels characters were also out to meet the fans
People could get typed as either SHIELD or HYDRA and receive their ID prior to the DVD release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The retailers were also unique while some interesting wares you may only find up in Canada!
Celebrities are also a huge draw for Fan Expo Canada and there’s a whole bunch to line up along the entire North building.
They even had a Twin Peaks reunion with Sherilynn Finn, Sheryl Lee and Ray Wise!
Elsewhere, Stan Lee had his own private island to handle the crowd (this picture was taken before he arrived)
And things are so nuts for The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus that they gave him a private room!
The Walking Dead also had one of the most packed panels of the con (though Stephen Amell claims he “won” Fan Expo).
And, of course, there’s tons of cosplay fun!
Lots to do right? Somehow, even with 120,000+ attendees, you could still get into the things you wanted – if you could get there! The biggest obstacle of the con is the structure of the Metro Toronto Convention Center itself. The con is on five floors spread across 2 buildings. It could take up to 25 minutes to get from room to room since there are few escalators and they bottle-necked quite easily. Make sure you plan extra time to get around, especially on Saturday!
Overall, I had a fantastic weekend and, for me, Fan Expo is great because it isn’t the same exhibitors and retailers as I see at the other cons. Different is good!
