I Meet Buffy! And Experience Hollywood Curling! With Kristy Swanson! Tracey Gold! Mackenzie Astin! Autographs! Photos! And More!
That’s my secret weapon… Cramps!
The movie that started it all. Yep, I could only be referring to the 1992 film version of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I remember being really young and seeing the film in theaters and falling in love with this crazy cheerleader who fought vampires. Joss Whedon may not have loved the tone of the film, but I personally loved it.
Now, of course many years later, Joss would convince The WB to take a chance on a television version of the movie, but let’s focus on the film for a second. Kristy Swanson was so perfect in this version of the Buffy mythos. So perfect!
When I spied Kristy on a list for a random event, I had to go. I called Scotty, he was out of town, I called Billy, he was working, I called Ace, he “was taking the night off,” then DVD Dave said, “yeah, let’s do it.” Also on the list were The Facts of Life (another favorite) star Mackenzie Astin, Wil Wheaton, Growing Pains star Tracey Gold, and a couple more people.
The event… Celebrity curling… No, not like curling weights or anything… The sport of curling… And it was about a half hour away… Only I would fanboy an ice rink in Valencia.
DVD Dave and I arrived and did a lap around. Curling is an interesting sport but more on that later. It’s an interesting thing about Los Angeles… You get about 20 minutes away and it’s a whole other world. Quite literally. It’s like walking into the the midwest. It’s a whole other world, that’s the only way I can describe it.
As we were walking back, we saw Wil Wheaton walking into the locker room. Doh! We missed him!
So, we ran downstairs, got our stuff and immediately ran into Mackenzie Astin! Can I tell you how cool Mackenzie Astin is?
I mean like braid your hair nice. I had my Last Days of Disco DVD cover and I talked about The Facts of Life for a hot second. So nice.
As Mackenzie was chatting with us, who walked in… Kristy Swanson… Doh… We missed Buffy!
Sadness…
So, we went inside and who was walking in… Growing Pains star Tracey Gold! Tracey was so nice!
She signed my Growing Pains DVD cover and then signed pretty much whatever anyone had for her. Then She did photos with DVD Dave and I.
There were only four of us here asking for autographs so it was fairly calm.
Then we went upstairs and saw everyone heading down to the rink. Kristy Said she would sign for us after the game. So DVD Dave and I went upstairs and watched the match.
Curling… I haven’t felt so Canadian since I got my Canadian citizenship card oh so many years ago. It’s an interesting sport where people take a large disc and slide it across the ice and everyone runs over and brushes the ice trying to get it into the bullseye kind of circle. At least thats what we could surmise.
Curlers are a passionate bunch. They have cowbells they bang on. Like they bang then a lot. And they cheer loudly when that disc gets in a good spot.
I didn’t know when that would happen but I’ll tell you, it wasn’t hard to figure out when that would happen. It was crazy.
I can’t help but insert curling into a variety of song and movie titles… In fact DVD Dave and I kept doing this during the match. Some examples,
Faster Pussycat, Curl, Curl
License to Curl
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Curl Me
You get the idea… I have to tell you, it was actually really fun to watch everyone participate in the curling.
I mean I wouldn’t have every expected Wesley Crusher and Buffy The Vampire Slayer along with Carol Seaver to be brushing ice and sending large discs sailing across the ice. It was slightly surreal.
I actually had a really fun time hanging with Dave and watching the match. Plus, Kristy looked so so so cute.
After the match we went upstairs and Kristy true to her word came over and literally signed everything we had. She was adorable. She opened the press kit I had and went through it, and basically was so over the top nice I can’t even tell you.
She is quite simply… One of the nicest people I’ve ever met. If I had 100 other things she would have signed them.
I mean that nice. Then she did photos with both DVD Dave and I and was just so nice.
I can’t even tell you. It was such a blessing!
DVD Dave did get Wil Wheaton earlier and since I wasn’t dying for him, I decided to head out.
It was an awesome day! It’s sometimes when these smaller events that are way more fun than the huge premieres!
Until next time kids…

Also in attendance was Brendan Fehr from Final Destination and Roswell. Fun night! Although the only downer was that annoying pap acting like Kristy’s personal agent. “Not right now guts! Not right now!”. B
What a pain! Kristy AND Tracey both looked great! So where are MY photo ops Mike?!?
Nice….all the people you love
I guess you’ll try to get SMG to sign that coffin… that would be awesome and cool if you ever managed to get her.
