Dragons? We don’t need no stinking dragons!
Dragons: Defenders of Berk – Part 2 is the conclusion to the second season of the TV series based on the hit How To Train Your Dragon films. The concluding 10 episodes feature more action, more adventure and… wait for it… more dragons!
The interesting thing about this set of 10 episodes is how much it progresses the story. It’s a touch darker, which inherently makes things more interesting. Led by the always affable Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) the feud between the dragons and the vikings has been put to rest and now they are even friendships that have formed.
Hiccup has formed his band of merry men (and women) with Snotiout, Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Tuffnet and the tough Astrid. They are the Defenders of Berk the title refers to. The episodes that round out the series are really well crafted and follow the continuity of the Dragon story. In fact some of the oddness that hindered the first part of the season are gone, which I was fine with, but these 10 episodes are even tighter than their predecessors.
It’s going to be interesting to see where the series goes once the second part in the film series How To Train Your Dragon 2 hits theaters June 13th. The characters in a television series are often forced to remain in one place or static. It’s just what happens. When you have 20 episodes each one has to start, stop and end. With a film the stakes are higher which generally forces characters to move forward and in essence grow up.
The final episode of the series where the Vikings and their relationships with their enemies are fleshed out is the standout. The Whispering Death Dragon which has been talked about all season is finally dealt with in an excellent conclusion and there is actual change that happens.
Another thing that’s going to be interesting is that the series is heading to Netflix starting in 2015. I’m wondering if the stakes will go even higher now that Netflix, which has been known to take many chances with episodic television, is guiding the show.
As it stands, Dragons: Defenders of Berk – Part 2 is an excellent continuation of the series and if you’re a fan like I am, I think you’re going to be really pleased with the result.
Special features include: Dragon Tracker Part 4 which looks at Skrill, Baby Thunderdrums and Speed Stinger and a sneak peak at How To Train Your Dragon 2, Here comes the Fire which is a cute Dragon mash up music video, and Evolution of Skrill with special effects supervisor David Jones talking about the history of the Dragons.
