Veronica Mars Movie Premiere Disappointment! The Fans Fund A Film And Get Shut Out! Doh!
Veronica Mars…
I think I should put in quotes and yell it out like Jake Kane in the final episode of the series.
Today was the Veronica Mars movie Los Angeles premiere. And while I normally would do my play by play and talk about what happened, I’m not going to today, because quite simply put, nothing happened.
There were fans lined up, backer shirts on display, homemade VM shirts etc… and everyone was pretty excited, I know I was. I had my Veronica Mars posters, my Entertainment Weekly magazine, Billy was coming, Pinky was here, The Other Mike was excited… But it was clear with the first drop of Enrico Colantoni, we were in for disappointment.
The set up for the Chinese Theater is always the same, fans stand across the street, and people can come over or… not.
Enrico Colantoni waved… Robb Thomas arrived and waved… And that was what we got.
Now, normally, it’s just a disappointment but the problem is… This is a Kickstarter funded film, the fans funded it, so the event where the fans are given a chance to be a part of it in person, all we’re given is a wave? I mean come over, take some photos, sign some autographs. It’s not that hard.
Both Enrico Colantoni and Robb Thomas came EARLY and still didn’t cross.
Security wouldn’t let people stand on the barricade on the other side of the street and then at the last minute let random tourists stand there… No fans, only tourists. Sigh…
I’ve been lucky, really lucky. I know that the cast is super cool. I mean especially Tina and Jason, they are just the most adorable people in the world.
And even Jason Dohring, they had him pose for photos in front of the car. He got back in the car, he then climbed into the backseat of the car, but even after all the car hopping, he couldn’t cross the street?
I’m honestly, kind of zen about the whole thing, but fans came in from as far as Australia. And nothing? It just seems like, if you’re going to be a part of a crowd funded film, you should really be over the top great when the fans show up in person to your premiere?
And yes, some people ran over for a few seconds and did photos for the tourists, but it was clear and it was obvious where the hard core fans were.
Chris Lowell crossed the street and refused to sign autographs. He did some photos and that was about it. I got rejected by Piz. The cherry on top of my day.
Ryan Hansen did run over, he skipped me until Billy said, “You have to sign his poster, he has the backer shirt on!” So Ryan was nice enough to come back and sign for me.
He was very cool.
So, I’m a little more than disappointed, mainly because I cut a check for the film. And honestly, maybe they were told not to sign, that’s a possibility, but all I know is.. There were a lot of disappointed fans on the barricade today. 🙁
The only cool thing was being able to meet some of the other Veronica Mars fans out there!
Until next time kids…

Holy shit, what a bummer! Did not think that would happen to a kickstarter movie. Maybe Dax told everyone not to sign? ;( So bummed, because I was thinking aboot the premiere while I was watching the movie in Century City and enjoying it. Glad you got Ryan Hansen at least. Shame on the no love being shown. I feel so betrayed and I regretfully didn’t donate.
“Big Mike”
Unfortunately many of the celebrities think that the dealers aren’t real fans. For the most part, they are correct. It sucks to be a fan and a dealer.
Hey Bob, not a dealer, I’m a collector, but I don’t sell autographs.
This is ridiculous! I hate when security can’t run things and real fans get screwed. I went to the Zac Braff fan funded movie at Sundance, and while I was lucky enough to get a photo with him security trapped some others in a hallway and they got screwed. (Note it was like 10 people) hardly a dramatic situation) Every single person in that movie should of crossed and supported the fans. Specfically the ones in backer T-shirts. Sorry to here it went that way. What a shame!
The backers who paid to attend the premiere got a fan pit on the carpet so I think they were focusing on spending time with those folks. I’m not saying they shouldn’t spend time elsewhere, but there were folks who paid specifically for this reward so I think they got priority.
Hopefully the Paleyfest reunion tonight will be better….it does suck for the real fans that were waiting..
Really? Dissed by the people who put green behing the movie? What the hell? When fans and supporters help back a movie,at least you should have a front and center spot!
The whole thing was a HUGE letdown. I waited hours for Ryan and then he only came over five minutes after I left. BOO. Luckily I got a picture with Chris Lowell, but he was the ONLY one who did the whole line (technically, Ryan did, too, but it was after the movie started, so there were maybe 20 people left waiting on the rail). Mikey was wearing the BACKER shirt. People had waited all day. It was just a bad situation all around for that cast not to go above and beyond. Even Chris Lowell wouldn’t sign in our area because things would be sold. So dumb.
You didn’t mention that the street wasn’t closed like it would be at a big premiere. So in order to get to us they would have had to cross a busy street with traffic. I follow your blog and Iike you have been able to meet them during filming. I’m so grateful they took the time to meet me then. I’m sorry you had a bad experience.
Aww! I was hoping you’d have some luck since I know how much you love VM! So sorry to hear this! :(((
