The Top Ten Worst Autograph Signers Of 2013! Who Made The Naughty List This Year? Find Out!
Yesterday, we had our top ten best autograph signers and most fan friendly celebrities… And today… It’s the flip side. The top ten worst autograph signers of 2013! Oh, I wish it wasn’t so, I really really do. Why can’t every list be the best list?
This list is based not only if a celebrity signs autographs, but the attitude of the celebrity, how fan friendly they are, if they throw the pen in your face… you know… The usual.
And so… Here we go!
10. Jennifer Lawrence – Yep, Katniss Everdeen isn’t as nice as she seems. For me even if she did sign, all Jennifer Lawrence would do is draw a circle on whatever you have. It’s more of the callous nature and her overall demeanor… Ugh… I know of one guy, who saw Jennifer one on one inside a premiere and she scoffed at him when asked for a photo!
9. Edie Falco – It’s a right of passage for every year that goes by, I get dissed at least once by Edie Falco. There was one night it was just little old me, and Edie flat out ignored my existence. Nurse Jackie… Take a pill.
8. Jonah Hill – My nemesis, yes I have a nemesis… Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill is unfriendly, rude and is totally full of himself. When he does lower himself to sign an autograph it’s like a check mark. Sad really.
7. Bill Cosby – Flat out refuses to sign autographs. I’ve heard this may be because of an eyesight issue, however even when someone asked him on twitter if he could get an autograph after an upcoming concert… Billy Cosby replied, “No.”
6. Bette Midler – One of the nastiest people I have seen out. At her recent run here in Los Angeles, not only would she refuse to even look at the few (I’m talking five on a busy night) fans, but she would scowl. This after saying on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno that she was, “Nice now!” Sigh… If this is nice… What the hell was mean?
5. Sarah Michelle Gellar – The former Buffy star isn’t crazy about meeting fans or even talking to people on set. Reports of her rude behavior have plagued her for years and while I’m a diehard Buffy fan, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that Buffy herself is pretty nasty.
4. Tom Hanks – America’s nice guy, is in actuality not so nice. Tom flat out refuses to sign, or will pull out his phone and take a picture of you thinking that’s a cute thing to do. All the while he has a shit eating grin on his face.
3. Jessica Lange – A phenomenal actress, Jessica Lange used to be one of my favorites… That is until our paths crossed. Cold, rude and and downright dismissive, Jessica Lange hasn’t signed an autograph in years.
2. Joseph Gordon Levitt – The 3rd Rock from The Sun star comes across all nice and chill but in reality he’s rather mean. He’s told fans, “wait here, I’ll be back!” and then he leaves another way, or he simply would rather walk through trash than see a few waiting people or pick up a pen.
1. Bruce Willis – There is no one that deserves this spot more than Red star Bruce Willis. Dubbed at the MTF offices as Douche Willis, Bruce likes to stand in front of the fans so they can gaze upon his bald dome in all it’s majesty. He’s so full of himself, people have resorted to booing him at his own premieres. By far, the worst person on this list.
Honorable Mentions:
Mel Gibson, Kristen Stewart, Harrison Ford, Ryan Kwanten, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Lena Dunham, Liam Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Elizabeth Banks, Winona Ryder, Ed O’Neal, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Sam Rockwell, Steve Carrell, Will Ferrell, Leslie Bibb, Vince Vaughn, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Zooey Deschanel, Larry David, Ashton Kutcher, Ed Helms, Sharon Stone, Zachary Quinto, Eva Mendes, Robert Zemeckis, Geena Davis.
Cosby has decided not to sign anymore. Very well-documented in autograph circles. He has been very respectful in telling fans he isn’t signing anymore. He will do photo ops. I would say the only way to get him going forward is if he writes a book and does a signing. Doesn’t deserve a spot on this list, especially considering his great track record over 50 years of a career.
Surprisingly, most of these people are THAT bad in NY. Just like some of our worst are okay in LA…
Mike: I agree with most from your list.
However, Jonah Hill? C’mon. You’ve made it well known you don’t like Jonah, but he’s never been difficult. He even came over and signed everything for fans and did photo ops with everyone who wanted at a talk show appearance this year. I just don’t understand why you continue to bash him just because you don’t think he’s an “Oscar award nominated” worthy actor.
Also, not sure Tom Hanks deserved to be on the list this year. He signed before/after 2 LA Q&A’s this year and also at an LA premiere. The guy signed much more than last year.
Lastly, it seems like many on your honorable mention list were simply holdovers from past years. Can you honestly state you saw them all in 2013? If you’re going to keep “holdovers” on your list, then Robert Redford permanently belongs on your list.
Btw, Mike – you need to keep watching this video of Jonah to show how nice he was this year to ensure you don’t put him on your list next year.
Jonah was so nice on the set of one of his upcoming movies and gave half decent graphs. Tom Hanks is nice unless he thinks your a dealer. Edie is also very nice typically at least in New York. (Maybe cause she is from here originally). Bette Middler did it every night with a smile at her play as long as the items were from the play. Redford should be on the list the man NEVER signs. As should Deniro and Morgan Freeman. Morgan signs one graph a year tops annually.
Bette Midler signed every night in NYC after her play…I saw a lot of videos..she seemed okay, she didn’t really want to be there but she did do it after the night shows.
Jessica Lange, I’ve heard she hates signing and doesn’t do it IP at all…but also heard that she was nice at a book signing she did this year and she sent autographs back to 2 fans who sent her a letter via the set of American Horror Story this summer.
For once I actually agree with your list. Still makes me sad buscemi is on there. He used to be the coolest.
What premiere did Hanks sign at Kurt, because as far as I know he didn’t. I know he did it a couple times but that doesn’t make him good.
Jonah Hill has always been difficult with me, yes I’m very open I don’t like him (still need him to sign a couple things) but from what I’ve seen and been told he’s not better. Not that I have him on a tether or anything.
Honorable Mentions are holdovers sometimes. But I only exclude them if I hear they are being nicer or have changed a little. I.e. John Goodman. If Natalie Portman starts signing with a smile on her face one more than one occasion I have no problem taking even her off! 🙂
Oh and Redford signed up a storm at the recent q and a’s here in LA!
Mike: My mistake. What I remember is that a few of the LA dealers had Tom Hanks signed stuff for sale right before Tom had those Q&As. I had assumed that it was at the Captain Phillips premiere where he did them. In researching it a bit further, it looks like they were done at Emma Thompson’s handprint ceremony. In any case, my point is that there were at least 3 LA events this year that Tom signed at, and maybe a couple that he didn’t sign at.
KC – Cosby’s great track record? I waited with a woman at a talk show taping 8 years ago. It was just the two of us. She had traveled 3 hours by bus to get him on an old LP from the 70’s. The car he was in was forced to stop by us due to a traffic light. The window was halfway down. The woman pleaded her case, that she was his biggest fan ever and begged him to sign. He wouldn’t even look at her, let alone sign or do a photo op as you say. He deserves to be on the list for sure.
Kurt – like many of Hollywood’s stars, Hanks only signs when the cameras from ET or Extra are on him and then it’s all smiles. I went for Hanks 4 times in the past 3 months and got nada.
Everyone: These are OUR opinions, so you may disagree with them as you will, but we form them based on our experiences over the course of the year during a multitude of events. If you’d like to have a say on this list, then write your own column and share your own experiences. Just because you have different experiences with stars doesn’t invalidate our opinions or make them wrong. And a big star signing THREE whole times in a year (especially when promoting multiple films) does NOT make them a “great signer.”
I agree with the Tom Hanks comments. He signed very few at the two London Premieres he attended in October. He did not sign one at the BAFTA event held in his honour either. He deserves to be on this list for sure.
Pinky,
You really need to chill out. Unlike you, Mike actually welcomes differing opinions and comments. I don’t need to write a column. Because you don’t like my stating that Jonah Hill has never been a bad signer and that Tom Hanks signed much more than last year, doesn’t make my comments any less worthy than yours. Please show me where I’ve stated that your opinion is not valid. I’d also like you to show me where it says I ever said Tom Hanks was a “great signer”. What I said was Tom Hanks signed at at least 3 public events in LA this year. He didn’t have that many more public appearances.
Susan: I was at one of the Q&As that Tom signed at. There were no paps or cameras there, so its not entirely true he only signs in front of the cameras. In fact, I’d argue the opposite. At premieres, where there are cameras, he rarely signs. Also, there are always cameras outside the talk show. I’m assuming that was one of the events where he didn’t sign this year. What I’ve personally seen and also heard from others is Tom, when he does sign, usually does so at low-key events. Now, he doesn’t always do those either, as I’ve been turned down by him one-on-one in the past. My point is there were many worse signers than Tom this year.
Kurt – like Pinky said, this is just the MTF family’s opinions. And, in my opinion, Hanks is a bad signer – period. I’m glad you’ve been lucky enough to get him, but I’ve got a Saving Mr. Banks mini poster personalized and signed by everyone, except Hanks. The recent four tries were just this year. I didn’t mention the other 5 times I’ve gone for him and come home empty handed. I plan on framing the Banks poster as is, because I’ll never get him to sign it. Also, not sure why you assume I only went to talk show tapings. I was only at one taping for him. The other 3 were Q&As, all low key, no cameras, and only 12-20 people. In fact, at the BAFTA screening there was only 3 people and he didn’t do it. Not a word or a wave or an apology as to why he wouldn’t do it. Maybe for you there were worse signers this year, but for me (and Mike) Hanks was at the top of the bad list. We can argue all day, but you can’t convince me he’s a good signer and vice versa.
Susan: First, I’m sorry you didn’t get Tom to sign this year. Like you, and most folks, in the past I’ve had also bad past experiences with Tom. Last year I saw Hanks 5 times and he didn’t sign or do a photo op. This year, I saw him twice and he signed one of the two times I saw him. I still would not classify Tom as a good signer; I’m just saying that I disagree that he should be appearing on the worst signer list for 2013. I still think he signed a lot more in LA this year than last year.
Eventually if you put in enough time, you will get Tom to sign. It depends on how much you value your time and how much value the signature would add to you.
We’re all allowed to have our opinions. What I dislike is Pinky’s criticizing anyone who doesn’t agree with her and her telling us to write our own columns. I know Mike writes this column because he likes hearing about others’ experiences. It’s unfortunate that Pinky would rather only have the Mike the Fanboy family respond to anything that Mike or she writes, when it doesn’t agree with her views. Then again, this is the same person who went off on Leslie Bibb just because Leslie didn’t sign that one day.
Fair enough. I’ve put in the time and effort for Tom in the past, but now I think now, he’s not worth MY time. For me, after too many bad experiences, I no longer want to get the person because they just soured my opinion of them and they can go shit in a hat. 🙂
I personally think if a ” star ” is truly for the people, they would sign as a thank you for paying to see their moves,tv shows,or whatever. When people stand in all elements waiting patiently for a glimpse or a signature,it is rude to ignore them, even laughing at the fans. I have stopped watching some films because of their “full of themselves” attitude! Thanks for the article,it helps me decide what to watch. Sad about Jennifer cause she is a newbie and hasn’t even gone the distance yet. Crash and burn!
Susan: I know exactly how you’re feeling. I had pretty much given up on Tom and was debating on whether to try for him the day that I ended up getting him. I had enough event that day which conflicted with my schedule and I had to choose between the two. I’m glad I went for Tom though to have finally overcome the obstacle. I have actors that I’ve soured on due to their lack of being fan friendly: Bill Murray, Robert Redford, and Jack Black to name a few, although I’ve gotten Jack Black before.
What do you think?
I think Kurt might be John…
I think The Anti Pointless Comments Commitee may be Pinky.
Great list..and those that don’t sign, people are still gonna go out and try and get them as if you don’t try you don’t get cause that moment you decide to sit home, you’ll see a Mike the Fanboy article that he/she signed. It all comes down to Luck at the end of all the prep and patience after all….happy new year
So you agree your comments are pointless with
THE PRO POINTLESS COMMENTS COMMITEE name.
It’s not Pinky but It just seems silly to make comments, and then mainly agree. Hence, pointless.
I really don’t think Pinky said anything wrong… I understand you want to flash your IP knowledge, but sometimes a show isn’t needed.
Aw. I have met Bette a handful of times. She has always been really amazing to me. Very motherly.
Why is Cameron Disz on this list? She is the worst to fans and an awful person. And Larry Davis has become great with fans, he should not be an honorable mention. While filming Clear History last year he signed and did photo ops every day on set.
In my previous post I meant *Why is Cameron Diaz not on this list? (If anybody knew how awful of a person she was then she wouldn’t get any roles).
For the last time, this list was composed of MTF members personal experiences this year. Cameron may be awful, but I don’t think anyone of us here tried for her this year, so that’s why she’s not on the list. Same goes for the best signers list.
I have to disagree with Jennifer Lawrence as well as Kristen Stewart in the honorable mention.
Okay, from like January to March, Jennifer wasn’t as nice as she used to be. But during the Catching Fire promotion, she basically always signed autographs for nearly everyone. And her signature was usually a “JL” and not just the circle. And we are talking about 6(!) premieres and 2 talk shows here were she was awesome from what I’ve heard/seen. And when fans met her when she was out and about, she also posed for photos during the last two months. So I think it depends on her mood and apparently she likes Hunger Games fans more than others^^
And Kristen Stewart – when I met her at the end of 2012, she signed autographs for 45(!!) minutes. Okay, that was 2012. In 2013 she barely attended any events and was busy with shooting movies most of the year, no new movies with her were released, she didn’t attend any premieres, but usually posed for photos with fans and signed autographs when fans met her in the city where she currently was. I heard lots of awesome stories from when she was shooting in Germany and when she was attending a fashion show in France. Sometimes she also signed autographs in front of her hotel. Considering that, I find it a bit unfair to put her onto the list. People always judge her and have the prejudice of her as a not nice person, while I hear more stories of her being awesome (sometimes VERY awesome) then the opposite and that’s also what I experienced myself. of course she sometimes has bad days where she doesn’t sign or doesn’t sign much (but there barely is any celebrity who doesn’t have those days) and if she doesn’t have much time, she can be extremely picky, but I didn’t even hear of something like that this year and since she barely attended anything…yeah^^
But okay, I don’t know what your experiences are.
on Jennifer’s “callous nature”, have you seen e.g. this video from the Catching Fire World Premiere? 😀
Have to disagree on one – Molly Ringwald. I was hanging out after a play in NYC, waiting really for Jason Biggs and Craig Bierko, but when Molly came out, she was all smiles, signed my program and posed for a great picture. She couldn’t have been nicer. For the record, both guys were wonderful, too.
Someone here is going to ridiculously say that the video of Jennifer Lawrence signing for the girl in the wheelchair was solely because the cameras were on.
I’ve met Jessica Lange she is very, very kind. However this was 05 and in NYC so…………. I heard Lena Dunham is also very, very kind along with the rest of the girls cast when they are filming around NYC but maybe that was when they started filming who knows.
I agree with Anti-Pointless – looks like we have another John on our hands. IMO, Kurt is the one who needs to “chill out” here.
